The paper cut collages made for this series search, as ever, for the irreducible shape and the harmonious palette. There is a sense of play and boldness in the colour-form relationships. In the carbon paintings, the materiality produced its own movement, and insisted on its own direction. I felt pulled into the peace of some works, while others are more forceful and dynamic. All these works exist on a spectrum of experiment with mark making and brush stroke. Sometimes loose and liberated strokes are calling out for the order and the containment of a highly deliberated, even geometric shape. Other times, the freeness of the medium creates such a magnetic world that it cannot be contained.
